Professional Graphic Design: Fulfilling Career with a Lot of Opportunity

Please describe your current position and industry. How did you find this job (Monster.com, Craigslist.org, a friend, networking event, etc) and how long were you searching?

My current position is a professional graphic artist and I am working with many different industries, primarily internet deal sites at the moment, though. I found this job through a friend who knew that I was very proficient with Photoshop and graphic design and he knew that I had just finished school. He introduced me to his business executives and let them know all that I could do for their company and he hired me right on the spot. I was searching for a job for about a year before I was introduced to the owner of the company and was hired.

Describe how you used technology in your most recent job search, and the benefits that it provided? (Examples: Social Networking Sites, Job Boards, Job Search Software, etc.)

The last freelancing job for some graphic designs that I received was actually because of a jobs listing website where I had listed my abilities and accomplishments and a business owner contacted me and had me do some of the design work for him. This was highly beneficial to me because I earned some work out of putting my account up on the website, and it also didn’t take me very long to create it at all.

To make myself stand out from other applicants I would make sure to include a lot of the freelance jobs for high-end companies that I have done as projects that I have completed and I would make sure to include all of the leadership positions that I have held throughout my life.

What types of technologies do you use to connect with professionals in your field, and which are the most effective at helping you find a job?

The best technologies used to connect with professionals in my field are all through the internet and are done online. Some of the most effective tools are free sites such as Google, Youtube, or photography sites that make it fairly easy to contact or get a hold of professionals in my field.

Describe either a job interview that went exceedingly well or that was a complete disaster. What did you learn from this experience that could help others excel in their own interviews?

A job interview that went very well for me was for my most recent job. I was dressed very professionally in a suit and tie and had all the paperwork and pictures there for me to show examples of my work. I also had some questions for the man who was hiring me and I felt that I was able to make casual conversation with him, which helped back up some of my communication skills that were listed with my resumé.

What is the single most important thing about the professional job search process that you learned on your own and what led up to this lesson?

The most important thing about professional job searching is that you can back up everything that you say or claim to be. For example, if you say that you can work with a program it is essential that you are completely proficient with the program and that you have projects that you can use to prove that you are fantastic with the software.

Did you use the services offered by your university’s Career Services program? If so, what type of information did you learn and was it useful?

I used a lot of the services offered by the Career Services program at my university and I was able to learn a lot about the ethics and professional aspects of the career that I wanted to venture into.

If you could redo one event from your professional or career-past what would it be?

If I could redo one event from my professional past it would be to find others that are good at what I do and to create a company that would provide professional graphic design services instead of going out on my own and doing a lot of freelancing work. That would have provided me with more funds, and it would have given me the opportunity to get my name and my work out into the world with greater ease.

My career has a professional graphic designer has been a rollercoaster, though I have enjoyed the ride. It has not been easy, but after finding clients and figuring out the best possible way to get my name out in the open and to show my work to others, it has been a blast. I now have individuals and businesses coming to me for work instead of me having to search for hours in order to find one simple job.

This is a true story as told to JustJobs.com and is one of many job advice interviews, including a Software Engineer and a Graphic Artist.  Visit JustJobs Academy to read more about a career in your desired field.
